Anxiety Free Dentistry

Dr. Carol Jin and her team make every effort to make your visit at our office a comfortable one. We understand that it can be fearful to visit the dentist and often times, many years have past since your last dental visit. Please know that there are options out there to help you through your anxiety and receive the dental care that you need and desire.

We offer a variety of anxiety free options from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to oral conscious sedation. Depending on your level of anxiety, the doctor will recommend the option that best suits your needs. Dr. Carol Jin has been specially trained in the safe and effective use of sedation for adult patients.

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous Oxide is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe.

Nitrous Oxide has been the the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. Nitrous oxide is safe and effective and the patient is able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all bodily functions. The patient may experience mild amnesia and may fall asleep, not remembering all of what happened during their appointment.

There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide:

  • The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
  • There is no after effect such as a "hangover".
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs, etc.
  • Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging.
  • It works rapidly as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds. In as little as 2-3 minutes its relaxation and pain killing properties develop.

Reasons To Not Use Nitrous Oxide:

You should not utilize Nitrous Oxide if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Though there are no other major contraindications to using nitrous oxide, you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.

You may want to ask your dentist for a "5 minute trial" to see how you feel with this type of sedation method before proceeding.

What Is Conscious Sedation?

Oral Conscious Sedation is easily administered (no needles) and the patient takes a small pill prior to their dental appointment. The patient is then escorted to the dental office by a companion driver. By the time the patient arrives to our office, they are more relaxed. The patient is then placed on a monitor to watch their vital signs and another pill may or may not be administered. When the patient reaches a comfortable level of relaxation, their dental treatment begins. When treatment is completed, the patient's companion drives them home to continue their state of relaxation.

A major benefit of oral conscious sedation is total relaxation and little or no memory of the treatment session.

The ideal candidate for oral conscious sedation is:

  • Patients who are 18 years or older
  • Patients who have a high degree of fear of having dental treatment completed
  • Patients who are embarrassed of their mouths
  • Patients who hate needles
  • Have a difficult time getting numb or who gag easily
  • Have very sensitive mouths
  • Need to have their treatment completed in as few appointments as possible
  • Just don't like coming to the dentist
